AWS-native tools (Cost Explorer, Budgets, CUR, Anomaly Detection)
Best for Most teams under $10K/month — tagging discipline plus these four is a functioning FinOps practice.
Strengths
- Cost Explorer gives daily granularity with service and account breakdowns, free. AWS Budgets monitoring and alerts (actual and forecast) are free with no budget limit — only automated budget actions cost extra, beyond your first two.
- The Cost and Usage Report (CUR / Data Exports) is the exportable ground truth for the day you outgrow the console; Cost Anomaly Detection gives free ML-based spike alerts (tune the threshold or it is noisy).
Limitations
- Native AWS tools cannot see non-AWS spend — OpenAI, Anthropic or Snowflake charges live outside them.
- Sharing means screenshots of Cost Explorer: there is no saved-view plus weekly-recap workflow for finance or another team, and anomaly alerts tell you the total moved, not which team moved it.
